ohhhh noooo, how I miss that town!!
I lived in Amsterdam for 6 month (as an exchange PhD student). My university rented a container in a newly build container-park (its way better that you now imagine, it is actually really wanted by many students). The city is so full of live and people are so friendly...and the dutch accent...how I loved it. I visited Amsterdam several times again with my gf, I think it will remain one of my favorite cities for a long time, so many good memories!
I was there during queens day, wearing a orange shirt I got from a (very beautiful
) co-worker.
I blended in perfectly with the locals she said 
(Queendays is just crazy, btw. Think of carnival in Cologne in orange and techno (and punk, rock, jazz, folk), AND family style free-markets (aka rag-fairs))
If I got a chance to work in Amsterdam again, I think I would return.
