Good Amercian Civil war novels?

Post by sushi »

I just finished Bernard Cornwell Starbuck Chronicles - meaning I will ask the universe to convince Cronwell to get his lala together and write the fifth book somewhat in the next 20 years.

Meanwhile I would like to find another good read covering that period. Any suggestions?

Gods and Generals, The Killing Angels, and The Last Full Measure are some of the best Civil War novels I've ever read. They are all told from the perspective of the various major generals of the war on both sides.

Edit: Also, although not directly about the Civil War, How Few Remain by Harry Turtledove is pretty good. Its a alt history novel about if the Confederates won their independence from the Union and goes over the "Second American Civil War." It also is the first of a series of novels that go through how WW1 and WW2 would turn out based on the CSA still being around. For instance the CSA allying with the Entente Powers during WW1 so the US ends up allying with Germany instead.

This is another alternative history novel - Gettysburg: A Novel of the Civil War. It was quite a long time ago so I hope I got the name right, but it was really fascinating in my opinion. You can read more about it in the description.

Never read novels regarding American civil war. Cant think of any movies off hand other than post war Outlaw Josey Wales with Clint Eastwood.

Books I did see years ago, never read, think I saw the mini series, highly rated titles such as "North and South", or "The Blue and the Gray".

Scrolling through the list that Cairdazar posted above, I remember reading Across Five Aprils in junior high or high school. I imagine that it would be pretty light reading for an adult, but I remember it being interesting at the time.

On this note, I've been reading the Forgotten Soldier. It's a really well done memoir from a German soldier on the Eastern front. I highly recommend it if anyone hasn't read it yet!
