RAM is so cheap atm he'd be crazy not to upgrade to DDR3, May aswell make yourself future proof

Anymore than 8 is a waste imo unless your into heavy gfx design and what not.

You just won't use it unless you like having 600 tasks running at once.

Only limit is the OS and RAM is always good. You need 64bit OS to get the high number as 32 only supports 4GB but I am sure you would go 64 bit.

If i were you i would upgrade the cpu heatsink from the off, Saves on faffing about later..

depending on the cooler it's easier to install while the mobo is out. I was lucky with mine and it went straight onto the stanard AM3 mount.

From what i have seen alot of the i series after market heatsinks require a mounting bracket on the back of the mobo.

But I thought about this mainboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... A-Z68P-DS3 which is a bit cheaper.

If you want to overclock your cpu, this mainboard might not be the right one because you cannot change vcore settings.
But if you don't want to overclock at all you can also save another 10$ and buy the i5-2500 instead of the i5-2000k

I find it hard to believe it doesn't have the ability to change vcore. Where did you get this info?

Me, too . I read this in the feedback area concerning this mainboard on the newegg webpage. There was one (or two, ore even more ) customer who said that there was no vcore option.

I think the i5-2500k would be suffice and I'm not sure whether you need an i7-2600k since you do not want to overclock your system. According to a German magazine, the i7-2600k is about 4-6 frames faster than the i5-2500k when it comes to games...not sure if that's worth it.

That is a very expensive motherboard, you could get one which is just as good for fewer than $150. It appears that gimmicks have bumped the price up on that particular one.

As for the processor, like Albino said, the 2600K is barely any slower than the 2500K for gaming but it really depends what else you use your computer for. If the extra $100 doesn't bother you then you might as well get the 2600K.

I've placed my order! I'm going with the i7 2600K... the difference maker being that I have $155 in gift certificates at Amazon.com ... so, I figured, why not "treat" myself (right before Halloween). Next step will be to learn a little overclocking (I added a separate, well-rated and popular OC fan).
