Some old routers perform poorly when more than 1 computer uses it at the same time. I prefer hardwire over wireless because neighbors, phones, wireless mouse have caused problems for me in the past.
With hardwire I would expect 1ms rather than the 3ms (37-99ms in the first ping is way to high) you're getting. Things that push the ping up past 1ms is router crappy (or is pushed beyond its capabilities by other users) your computer is having issues (infection, etc). Or if someone else on your connection is using p2p (bittorrent, etc) and doing unattended heavy downloads or uploads, that can ruin your ping. Keep an eye on your router lights to see if something is continously talking to it. Make sure your computer is the only activity blinking when testing.

I wouldnt expect you to lose connection to a BF3 server unless your internet bandwidth was maxed out. Just crappy play.
Since ur newly exploring ping, 1000 milliseconds = 1 second. 100ms = 1/10 of a second. Youre measuring travel time of a packet to get somewhere and come back.
37 ms 99 ms 99 ms 192.168.1.254
Thats your router, first hop. Way too high.
26 ms 33 ms 23 ms 217.32.141.131
Thats your 2nd hop, could be your ISP or your modem depending on configuration. Either way the ping is better on the second hop and it has to travel thru the first. I would consider that a decent ping if its your ISP. You may be looking at a crappy router.

I used to have a similar issue back in the last year of 42 and for about 2 years into BF2. Every 30 seconds my ping would go to 600s. I couldn't do nothing for a couple of seconds or got disconnected. Played like that for about 3 years. Imagine the frustration and surprise when I discovered the problem and it felt odd to play the game smoothly. It turned out my Canyon wireless router was crap. So if you have a chance try a different router.

Thanks for censoring my name out.

So I plugged the laptop directly into the router using an ethernet cable and got this:
C:\Users\*****>ping 192.168.1.254

Pinging 192.168.1.254 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.254: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.254:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms

C:\Users\*****>
Which leads me to think the router is fine and it's the mains connection point which is the problem. I'm living in a room I've rented from this old couple, the house is immaculate and I seriously doubt they will allow me to run a cable from the router all the way to my room. And I can't be on teamspeak with them around.

I'm going to try the wireless again.
