I should try my nicer headphones with BF3 and see what I've missing. My primary motivation for picking up the G35 when I already had nice Audio-Technica ones was to get surround-sound. This was also factoring in other games than BF3 multiplayer. I suppose I probably would spin around to catch the guy trying to knife me if I heard footsteps regardless if they were positionally behind me.
