Motherboard suggestions?

Post by Hgx »

Hey guys, once again I come to you for some tech recommendation and support :)

Im looking to get a new motherboard since mine (Asus P8 H61-M LX3) it's not really that good as far as I know and (if that's the case) I'd like to use it in another cheaper PC that Im building for my mom.

This is MY PC right now:

Windows 7 64bit
Asus P8 H61-M LX3
Nvidia GeForce 650ti 2gb
8 GB Ram Kingston
Intel i5 - 3570k @ 3.40 ghz
Western Digital 500GB SATA 3 HDD
Western Digital 1TB SATA 3 HDD

The 2nd PC will probably be something like this:

Windows 7
Asus P8 H61-M LX3
4GB DDR3
Intel i3 3240 (or similar will see)

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

honestly, as long as it supports your processor socket, RAM speeds and amount, and has enough PCIx for your video card the motherboard isn't that big of a deal, especially if you're not running RAID setups or running really special hardware (which, to be fair, you really aren't).

Personally I can't recommend anything specific for you because I don't know enough about intel stuff (always went AMD in the past due to budget and cost-performance), but if you were going to look at brands I'd suggest asus, gigabyte, evga, MSI as my top 4. I've never had any issue with any of their products that wasn't due to me being stupid.

What Matsif said.

Just do what I did: Stare at endless pictures of mobos until you find a layout that will work out for you.
Then find what features/ports it has to further it down even more.
3 weeks later, you'll find what you need

Do consider what cpu cooler you have and where the ram slots are on the MBs.
I have had to change coolers once as that one was blocking the 4th ram slot

Oh interesting.

Thank you again guys.

I'll stick with this one then since it works just fine and well, things are "complicated" around here to say the least.

The question is what do you need from your MoBo?
If it has all the slots and connections, and it fits your case (and supports your CPU and RAM) then thats the MoBo you need.
Other then that it doesn't really effect performance.

Yeah I think Im cool then with this one. I didn't know about the performance effect, guess I'll be wasting my money on either a new card, or a new monitor

You have a K series cpu, which is for overclocking, but you can't overclock on an H61 mobo. If you're building another computer, you might as well upgrade your mobo so you can OC. Pretty much any Z77 mobo will be good, idk what prices are like where you are so I can't really recommend anything specific.

Thank you, I wasn't planning on OCing for now, but will certainly do in the near future, I'll check that out and have it in mind.

Just gonna say what already been said but might add some more.
The H-series from Asus is the really budget versions, I've never even looked at those because they never have overclocking capacity and with a K-series cpu you really want that, even if you're not overclocking.
I'm not sure about this but do you have the turbo boost in your bios, if not that alone is a reason to get a better motherboard.
The Turbo boost clocks your cpu with a few hundred megaherz (my 2500K from 3.3GHz to 3.7GHz if needed) and it will do the same to your 3570K, same socket but while mine has the Sandy Bridge chip yours has the Ivy Bridge chip.

I recently got a new mobo because my old Asus broke down (gonna send it for warranty repair) but since the socket both you and me have right now are old compared to what is used today there wasn't that much to chose from, but I found a pretty good one called AsRock Z77 Xtreme 3, it wasn't the cheapest one but I'm really happy with it, it has everything I need and more.

Also a reason to get a better chipset than the H61 that you have now is that it will handle your memory better, well easily said, your computer will get faster.
If you upgrade your mobo today, I just have one big tip for you, get as many SATA3 slots as possible because there you have a huge performance boost in loading compared to the old SATA2, also USB3.0 is like night and day compared to USB2.0!

Just my fiftyeleven cents! ;)

Assuming you need a 1150 socket I would recommend getting the Asus maximus Hero IV (c2) for 160€. You get the most for the money, really.

Thanks for the suggestion, sadly that's a little bit too expensive here, but good to know.

LGA1150 is for the generation that came after your 3570K, you should have LGA1155.
