Mouse freezing and then jumping

Post by Calloutman »

My mouse is intermittently freezing and then a fraction (maybe 1/3?) of a second later jumping to where it should have been - considering my mouse movements in that time when it was frozen.

I think this happens much more regularly while gaming, it's a massive pain as your view is suddenly locked in place and you invariably are in a gunfight and get shot. It does happen while out of a game too, maybe the same amount but it's not as noticeable as only the cursor freezes rather than your view in game.

I'm really not sure what's causing this.

What kind of mouse are you using? Connected via USB or old fashioned PS/2? Do you have a joystick attached as well?
Try different USB-port and if you have another mouse, try that one to see if it gives same problem.

few things you can check and see if it still happens to narrow it down:
1. try different mouse.
2. try a controller if you have one, does it move smoothly now?
3. reduce polling rate of the mouse
4. if you move the mouse really slow, does it move smoothly or does it "jump"/ticks?
5. your setup is overclocked, try to run the cpu (and ram if overclocked) at stock speeds to see if its a stability issue.
6. may be caused by failing HDD, check with manufacture tools
7. may be caused by outdated Realtek drivers (if you have a realtek soundblaster / onboard), try updating from realtek website.
8. try disabling non-essential MS programs / start in safe mode
