Shopping for a Gaming Laptop...

Postby InsanityRocks » Mon Mar 21, 2016 1:47 pm

Hey Folks,

I'm thinking of picking up a gaming laptop in the near future (3-6mos). I can use all the help I can get.

What's a good budget? I don't need top of the line. Nor do I want bottom of the pool. I honestly don't know the most taxing game I have now.

What's a good brand? Does it matter? What about support? For the US folks, does it make sense to get something at Best Buy for their Geek Squad support?

What questions have I not asked? This is my first time shopping for a Gaming Laptop.

Thanks!

why a laptop for gaming? saving space on the desk?
Or is it a laptop and it should be suitable for gaming?
Do you want to move it regularly? (eg for late night education with the missis? A tablet is better for that 8) )

:? I'm not sure how to respond

I guess a laptop suitable for gaming. And we've run out of space for desks and desktops.

I am trying to get the Mrs into gaming.

If you want it to be able to comfortably play anything that can be considered triple a, new or in any way graphically heavy, you'll probably need to aim for something with at least a 960m or the equivelant as a baseline. I have no real clue about US prices, but here in expensiveland, anything like that runs you an easy $1200+ for machines in that range.

Mobile GPU's have gotten a lot better than they used to be due to the main improvements from the past couple generations of architectures being power efficiency, but they're still much weaker than the same model range equivelant for desktops.

A 960m for example has about 60-70% of the raw performance that a stock desktop 960 has, and that's comfortably a midrange card. Also sitting in a laptop that might eventually throttle due to thermals, and also can't overclock to compensate.

In the end it's all dependant on what your expectations are and what you want to use it for, but there's still ways to go before portable gaming becomes affordable, comparatively.

I would go here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestALaptop/
and file a request or read through the content on the sidebar.

Personally, I would just chose among Lenovo's laptop line. Those with dedicated GPU will probably ok for most games.
I think they even have some gaming line or so.

Alienware and Razer have some gaming laptops. Razer is apparently also working on an external GPU thingy to complement their laptop.

There are tons more like Acer, MSI, Lenovo etc. If you go OEM you can get some really good Clevo laptops as well from various places.
