Automatic PC Reboot [RESOLVED]

Post by Shifty »

Whenever i try to play a game (doesnt matter what game) my pc loads the game and at the point you start playing the sounds stutters and my PC reboots.

Does anybody have an idea what the problem might be

P4 3.2 Ghz
1 Gig Ram
Gigabyte X700 Pro

Thanks, Shifty

I am not a comp tech but that is what was happening to my rig. I took it into the shop and they said it was a bad memory controller. Had to replace the motherboard. You can test yours by running an old program called memtester I think you can find it at ms support page, just google it. Run it with the ram you have now if you get an error swap out with a stick you know is good and run the test again. If it fails with different sticks it is most likely memory controler.

Of course yours maybe a software problem I would remove reinstall all drivers and programs. You can check these first by running dxdiag.exe.

good luck

Shifty, Soundcard or "sound on board"?

Do you use "hardware acceleration" within the games?
disable it.....

Another thing you might want to try is reseating everything but the processor.

Drive Cables, power cables, memory, and especially your video card and other expansion cards. Beleive it or not, they can sometimes work loose.

sounds memory or power related.

Try removing a stick of ram and see if it still does it, if it does then try the other stick.

Your memory timing may be too agressive, or when the game starts drawing on the system memory your power supply cant supply the required power.

you can try unplugging every thing extra (cd rom, floppy drive, any extra hard drives) and see if things work. If it does, then it is a tired power supply.

That happened to me for a bit, I had to fool around with the ATI drivers for a while, it seemed, because ati doesnt completely remove all installed components when uninstalled, that I was using a bit of one driver for this and a bit of one driver for that, I completely removed all traces of ATI drivers and reinstalled the latest official ones, now my pc works fine. Although it could be a sound problem...
