Windows beaten again: Windows Genuine Advantage

Post by Gravis »

Windows Genuine Advantage was started earlier this week.

What it does is download a small update to your system (when you use windows update) and next time you try to update and you have an invalid copy of windows it wont let you download anything but security patchs.

There is a very simple way around this (wont last long though i suspect)

If you really need to know, feel free to pm me, I rather not post it here and get GC in trouble :)

This is only for non critical and non security hotfixes though, they still let you get them even if you have a dodgy copy.

Anyone tried the Vista Beta (Longhorn) yet?

I don't think the work around is anything illegal or in violation of any agreements since it requires no "hacking" or tricks. You can freely disable it in IE (just another "MS WTF were you thinking?" enhancement lol).

I know there's a java exploit that you can use to get around it, but it's unnecessary.

Well I installed Longhorn Beta yesterday and it took fookin ages ....... anyway it couldnt even recognise my sound card (SB Live - probably quite common), couldnt even install drivers for it - said it wasnt there.

6 gigs of crap TBH - I put XP back on ten minutes later - lovely

I'll wait for the real thing to come out.

I traded a copy of XP home that I had extra straight across to Microsoft, plus shipping for a copy of the new OS. Due in the mail, soon. I hope its not the pain in the arse that you found it to be, Smudge! 8O
