There were many patches for 42, go to the EA website and download the latest.
We are using BF2 in our tourny now, we all loved 1942 but it was time for something new. Of course we played it for 2 years

You need to download the full 1.6 patch and the 1.61 incremental patch. Also make sure to update punkbuster.

You also need to check if the server is running a mod or expansion pack. I haven't looked recently but I'd guess most servers are running some kind of mod.
