Good to know ECM is ALSO broken....dice...dice....pfff more dissapointing everytime.

Maybe they intended it in this way...who knows.

Good to know to keep the locks off you instead off trying to dstract missles with it though!

Thanks SnowWolf!

Well my only concern came from the patch note, and went to the source to review them, an I am a concerned that come patch day ground forces against below radar air; and the incorporation of flares will make it impossible to take them down. On the flip side it could have the opposite effect keeping air grounded. I hope that neither come to fruition, but instead a more dynamic form of air combat.

As for his statement that ECM is broken on the jets ... His Head is broken ...

The simple fact, that the Heat Source is located on a different section of the model, in regards to Jets and Helicopters, causes Heat Seekers to stay on Jets more efficient than on Helicopters, as their Heat Source is simply more exposed.

Corrupt Intel based on Corrupt Education .. but thanx for sharing and adding to the confusion.
Definitive ECM Guide ... my ass. k:good:

Well yes, the heatsource is more exposed. But that doesnt explain the random behaviour of missles hitting you or not, or am I mistaken and should it?

I've also had suspicion that is was random because sometimes I got hit, and sometimes I didnt.

But it just emphasizes one thing. Keep the locks off your plane and dont let them fire missles at you.

As simple as possible ... it does help if one understands the way models and projectiles relate as well as the structure of design.

Heatseeker Missile - locks on ObjectTemplate Heatsource, which is a child to the target vehicle's engine. Missile detonates when connected to a heat source or on terrain collision. Think of an invisible funnel on the nose of the missile.

Laser Guided Missile - locks on vehicle's collision box relevant for the laser guidance system and detonates when it connects with a vehicle's projectile collision box.

(There are several collision boxes to every visible model, one for projectiles, one for terrain, one for soldier/player collison and so on ... )

What makes a difference is where the engine is located within the model and position of heat source, in regards to where the heat source is presented.

ECM DO NOT present a heat source, but obstruct the collision box by presenting additional objects allowing the lock-on counter of the target to decrease. Think of big invisible spheres around the visible chaff, which in itself is only an " effect".
These chaffs do not have a heat source.

IR Flares DO present additional heat sources, which is why the heat seekers detonate on them.

The polygons of the chaff cloud help obstruct the heat source of the chopper, as it moves slower than the jet.
Which is why ECM works good on Chopper vs. Heat Seeker but not so well in Jet vs. Heat Seeker.

Anyone else without a ticket ?

Good to know and thanks for posting the guide.

I would take others input as an opinion and leave it at that. I am not sure slamming someone for trying to be helpful and contributing to the community is good for the community. Please keep your comments civil in the future.

Maybe that is exactly why i "slammed" this one ... the mere statement and how they did their "tests" proves that they are a wee bit out of their element. And then claim a "definitive" ...
Hey doc, i ran out of options, so this will be it. ... lol
and that crap is starting to make waves ...

But I guess i don't know jack about creating models, adding effects, coding projectiles and all thar stuff...
I suppose, we need yet another bitch thread, complaining how the ECM is broken for jets ...

I know it will have a whole floor laughing ;)

That video summed up alot of evidence of how ECM works in BF3 and was informative. Thanks for posting.

For me the ECM doesn't even break the lock. I get locked, pop the ECM, and the missile is not impressed. This happenes on both jets and helis.
