Commander Mode on Unranked Servers

I think you can choose your commander side by joining as a normal soldier, pick your team then go:
esc -> Team Setup -> Commander -> Take Command

Commander is very disappointing after BF2. Yet, it does not take a player slot like BF2.

Servers have 66 spots so it's still 32v32.

I think Sloth is right on this. I tried this on a pub yesterday and it would not let me join as commander from my team when we had a commander and the other side did not. Once I switched sides I could join.
