BF2Pro - A Battlefield 2 Modification
-----------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
Beta 3

*********************
** What is BF2Pro? **
*********************

BF2Pro is a modification for Battlefield 2 that aims to enhance gameplay, and in particular to make
it more fun, strategic and challenging in competition. It's purpose is not to create a new kind of
game, but to keep the general feel of Battlefield 2 intact (see our philosophy below for more info).

*********************************************
** BF2Pro client and server installation **
*********************************************

To install on clients and servers:
Unzip the BF2Pro zipfile to your Battlefield 2 folder, using pathnames.

To remove BF2Pro:
Delete the Battlefield 2\mods\bf2pro folder.

Running BF2Pro:
To run BF2Pro from the command line, add "+modPath mods/BF2Pro" to the command line. This applies
to both clients and servers.

Clients can also activate the BF2Pro mod in the Commmunity -> Custom Games menu.
Joining a server that is running BF2Pro will activate the mod automatically.

Servers that use the dedicated server launcher program can also run the mod by selecting BF2Pro
in the mods dropdown list, which is in the maplist section.

******************************
** Changes made by BF2Pro **
******************************

A brief summary of the changes made are listed here.
For more detailed information, please see bf2pro-changes.txt

Infantry
- first shot accuracy for assault rifles, carbines, submachineguns, light machineguns and
sniper rifles improved
- standing and crouching accuracy modifiers for assault rifles, carbines, submachineguns,
sniper rifles and pistols improved (prone modifiers are unchanged)
- light machineguns tweaked to allow more accurate fire in short bursts
- assault rifle, carbine and light machinegun damage now decreases at ranges beyond 100m
- submachinegun and pistol damage now decreases at ranges beyond 25m
- crosshair added to unzoomed sniper HUD to fix hit detection not showing when unzoomed
- dynamic crosshair on HUD now reflects current accuracy more consistently

Vehicles
- TV guided missile lifespan reduced (effectively a range reduction)
- blackhawk minigun splash damage reduced
- tank shell damage to helicopters increased slightly
- plane afterburners deplete significantly faster

Desired results of these changes:
- Infantry weapons should be less random and more effective within a reasonable range
(short range for SMGs, medium range for most weapons, long range for snipers). This
will hopefully reduce reliance on grenade launchers and C4.
- Helicopters should no longer be able to destroy vehicles and camp vehicle spawns from
beyond fog range, encouraging more aggressive play.
- The blackhawk minigun shouldn't annihilate infantry as much ^_^
- Tanks should now be able to disable attack helicopters (set them on fire) with a single
tank shell.
- Afterburners should be used more sparingly, making dogfights more exciting and allowing
SAMs to occasionally hit planes that are out of flares (maybe, lol).

*******************************
** Possible future changes **
*******************************

We're looking for a way to make the mobile AA vehicles more effective against planes.

Currently, the flak cannons do loads of damage to planes, but the shells travel too slowly and as a
result its nearly impossible to hit any planes that aren't flying directly at you. The problem is
that the flak shells don't act like they did in previous BF games - in BF1942 and BFV, flak shells
would explode when they came within a certain distance of a plane.

If anyone knows of a way to make the BF2 flak shells behave like they did in BF1942 and BFV, let us
know.

Also, we're planning on modifying a few of the existing maps (mainly the 32 player versions) to make
them a bit more competition friendly.

** BF2Pro philosophy **
*************************

Alright, if you don't want to read a book, stop here :>

The overall aim of this mod is to balance 2 seemingly conflicting ideas:
- Enhance the competitive gameplay of Battlefield 2
- Keep the feel of the game as faithful to the original Battlefield 2 as possible
Of course, this is not an easy task, but we will do our best.

What makes a class-based teamplay game good in competition?

In our opinion, there are 3 things that define a good class-based teamplay game:
1. Strategy
The game must have enough strategic depth so that simple strategies will not overpower everything else.
Simple and easy to execute strategies should have counter-strategies.
2. Skill
The game must have scope for skilled players to perform better than others using the same class or
vehicle, and relatively little randomness. This also means that a single skirmish should not determine
the outcome of the whole round.
3. Teamwork
The game must have balance and codependence between classes and vehicles. This encourages teamwork, and
allows every member of a team to contribute to the team's success (or failure).

Now, when you think about BF2, you think "well, BF2 is like that except for a few things", right?
The developers of BF2 probably tried their best to make a perfect class-based teamplay game (they often
mention "rock-paper-scissors" style balance), however, with their lack of competitive experience they fall
short in a few areas. We hope to make BF2 a little closer to a "perfect" game as defined above.
