Gamespy

Post by Gwynzer »

Be warned: Gamespy servers are closing down which includes BF2142. You may only get a month or two out of this unless DICE have a workaround.

Worth it regardless. I'll be trying to run a 2142 based event towards the end of next month.

Im not familiar how servers stuff works. will we be able to host our own server to play 2142 on somehow or can we only rent from gamespy?

Gamespy hosts the master server list that all the other gameservers (I've a few servers, I host them on a dedi) report to and go "Yo, I'm running. This is how many players I've got and what map I'm on dawg". Master server then lists all of the joinable servers :). If it goes down, game is essentially gone.

My take was: servers still exist, you just don't have a server browser. So I guess if there's enough interest someone will make a new server browser?

Worst case scenario I would think you could still connect via ip. So if you just wanted to get a group together you could still do so I'd imagine. Be a hassle but should be doable. Or as zapper said someone may make a third party server browser.

Hamachi, All Seeing Eye (is that a thing still), or just direct connect.

It might just straight kill the game though, I doubt it's got more than 100 on a peak night.

I wonder how they'll do it. If it's an invisible change that just swaps servers while keeping everything running the same, it'll be fine. However if it requires patching the games to connect, then that will probably be the final nail in the BF2142 coffin :(
