Star Citizen is free for a week

Post by CekiHappy »

Due to DragonCon 2014 (no, i have no fraking clue what that is either) RSI is letting people try out Arena Commander free from now until Sep 5th.
Instructions:
1. Go to https://robertsspaceindustries.com/prom ... oncon-2014
2. Enter promo code: dragonflight2k14
3. Weep as your graphics card bleeds molten iron
I know there's a couple people here who are interested in star citizen, but haven't backed it yet and probably won't until it's closer to release or they get to try it out, and here's your chance.

Dragon Con, back in my day before Internet. We had BBS's. And when someone did a D&D convention, they'd have to post advertising in the news print. Then we'd walk 10 miles in the snow to get to school.
Seriously, there was no internet gaming back then. We had to log into a BBS and take our turns. Turning point for me was the original Warcraft and Metal Marines which allowed dialup. We browsed the world via the world wide web thru a BBS, which was a pain in the ass until the Internet version came along and introduced DNS. I wasn't sold on the internet until a someone showed me Subspace in 1995.

this is some kind of sorcery...i fired up the game and my shity xfire caused rainbows everywhere in the hangar. i had to tun it off but then graphics weren't that good (can't wait for the new nvidia release). the game looks nice though, too bad i won't be able to play anymore this week. either way, even before the free weekend i had decided to get it once its out.

I was able to run it really well
However I don't have any ships except for that default one and it's handling is very slide-y :?

Welcome to space! You have to overcome inertia if changing directions so initially you will continue sliding in the direction you were initially heading due to the lack of air friction helping slow you down. Short of full bursting with your main thrusters in the opposite direction of your initial direction you will continue sliding quite a bit as the mini thrusters that are used to change direction just aren't powerful enough to overcome your inertia in that direction instantaneously. The key really is getting used to the slide and using the inertia to keep moving in one direction while firing your cannons at someone behind you like a boss. It's slightly better with higher performance ships as their control thrusters are of better quality and your main thruster can correct it quicker if you do the turning in the opposite direction thing but it's still kinda slide-y.

I assume that's what you meant by slide-y. I could be wrong... :)

I'm just waiting for them to update the AC to allow customization of controls or at least remember weapon group changes. I can't use the Saitek profile for my X52 Pro on windows 8 apparently so I'm defaulted to really awkward weapon layouts. The X52 has a dual action trigger and a missile fire button. Ideally, I'd be firing my secondary weapon group with the second action of my trigger instead it uses the missile fire button while my missiles are launched via a completely different button that's hard to press while I am also trying to shoot my secondary weapons... And at the moment the deadzone between when motion occurs and when I move is too much with my X52 making precise aiming kind of a hassle putting me at a disadvantage against mouse scrubs 8) Which is something that I've never had issue with in any other flight/space sim so I don't believe its my stick but it might be...

Speaking of which if anyone has a suggestion for a good HOTAS that works really well already i.e. doesn't seem to have as bad a deadzone I'd be much grateful.

lol I know physics meng - just wasn't expecting it to be that much in the game, but I know all the ships have different "engines"/handling with better "inertia propulsions" ~lol
I've always been checking up on RSI (pretty much everyday)

Same on my SLI setup. If you enable V-sync (have to do it through your GPU control panel for the specific program), it may fix the issue.

Haven't tried it much in Star Citizen, but I've played a lot of Elite: Dangerous with it (their flight mechanics are just perfect for me) and my X52 is just fine. There's a few spring- or magnet-mods you can do with the x52 which changes the deadzone. They're quite easy, you may want into looking to do one of those for now, better than replaing the full thing.
