Who cares!? Pronounce it as you see fit and, most likely, people will know what you're talking about.

The why is simple, every time someone says GIF on Teamspeak, Gwynzer has a tick where he's compelled to interject JIF.

I would say 'gift' with a hard g, it makes sense that gif would use a hard g too.

Apart from Gwynzer I never heard anybody pronounce it "jif". Probably because in Croatian every G is hard, so when we read it its just "gif", or as you would pronounce "ghif".

He actually did make a nice video about the gif/jif argument but I can't find it right now
