What is your price range Rebel? Are you running AGP or PCIE? How good is the rest of your computer? (no point buying a really good graphics card if the rest of your system will slow it down)

I'm looking for something between $50 and $250.

It's PCIE.

For the most part my computer is relatively fast. It's only a few years old. Currently I'm running a Radeon X300 128 MB card.
For the price is it worth upgrading the card at all?

stay with the newest generation, which is 7900 assuming u want to be with nvidea. a 7800gtx might be faster but it doesnt have the latest effects built into it etc.

So maybe a 7900 GS?

OEM MSI 7800GTX @ around 300

Will last you way into the future.

Always look long term when upgradding, if you can.

Normally id agree x, but considering directx 10 wont work with any current card, id suggest only spending a small amount for now.

If u want to get the maximum out of games now and in early 2007 then ull need to buy a cheaper card now and then spend more on a fancy direct x10 one in the new year sales.

Thats what i intend to do anyway.

If you want to stay with ATI, take a look at the Radeon X1600XT - 256Mb -GDDR3 PCI express x16. $130 right now! I bought one for my son last month, he's a WOW gamer though, and loves it. Huge difference from an on board x200. He said it makes him play better now. -lol- Seemed like the most bang for the buck as far as ATI goes. I usually read the feedback forums at New Egg.com to get product reviews before I buy.
If you go with NVidia, then Xrcist pegged a winner for you.

generally u get what u pay for. i just dont think its a good time to spend big on any computer hardware. Windows vista on the way, direct x10, new intel and AMD sockets for the CPU's, new ram....
Its all changing right now and new things always cost more than their worth.

EDIT: saying all that, id love to have a 7800gtx right now. itll see u through battlefield 2142 really nicely.

Video cards prices just made a nice size drop which usually means there will be a launch of the next generation in the next month or two which will drop prices again.

Ash brought up a good point.

You have to look at the trends.

There are definitely right and wrong times to buy hardware.
