Is ti possible to convert a Word Document into a jpeg or other picture file? If so, can you please enlighten this Word n00b?

Sure it is. I do it very simply and with not much tech savvy I am afraid.

I open the document on my desktop and ensure it is as readable as possible. I then use Ifranview32 (free graphics application) to make a screenshot of same. I now have a picture of my document and can save it in any graphics extension I choose to.

I told ya it was simple and low tech, but it works great.

you could just use paint as its already on your machine.

All you can do is a plain Screenshot of Word and then paste it into Paint. There is no way i know that Word directly renders a page as an image. Maybe it's good enough for you to have the word documents as pdf? What are you trying to do anyway? Knowing some more details i'm sure we can help you get the job done.

This is your best bet yet. This plugin is shareware and does exactly what you need to do. it changes word docs to jpg or bmp files. Only 2.9mbs to download and it got an 89% positive feedback from users.
