i recon the prices of that tech will drop very quickly. Buying one of those cards now is pointless in my opinion, ther're gonna get alot better very quickly and as soon as some competition arrives the price will drop.
anyway, i eventually caved in and ordered the athlon 64 4000+, and that board. i so nearly went for a duel core one but in the end i decided not to. I dont see how a duel core will help game performance so i went for single core speed instead.
when the time comes ill be able to upgrade to a pci-e card, and maybe further down the line a new cpu. One things for sure, im gonna be running Crysis on max when that arrives, even if it costs me £3000!

What makes you think the CPU is the problem? GRAW is extremely taxing for the gfx card too, if you want to have all effects and a high resolution.
I could run the demo with a 3500 64 s939 and a X800XT PE very acceptably on default quality settings for my system (some settings high, some medium).
And it's "dual" core, not "duel" core - or did you think of a CPU where the cores are fighting each other?

Considering the topic matter and how important resolving it is to Dax, I think spelling one word poorly is not on his priority list, mate.Kraxi wrote:And it's "dual" core, not "duel" core - or did you think of a CPU where the cores are fighting each other?
Besides, do you even know if english is his first language or a well spoken and written second one. Anyways, give the guy a break, please.

English is my first language actually even worse, im English! which probably explains it, none of us can speak or spell as well as people who learn english as a second language!
kraxi, u r a prick though.
the upgrade pissed me off for about 6 hours in which time i couldnt work out why my system wouldnt start up. Turns out i had my new PSU connected wrongly which stopped bootup all together. thats sorted now though thankgod.
i spent about £280 on the upgrade which pound for pound probably wasnt worth it, but i had been told that before i did it. i can now run BF2 on max settings with around 50 FPS on average. Ghost recon doesnt actually make much of a difference, about 5 FPS faster but not really noticable in reality.
im glad ive done it though, the board i have can have the new CPU socket which is coming out shortly and it also has a PCI-E slot and AGP. and considering my card is currently an AGP, it means my machine now has a future. i wont have to buy a new machine for at least a year now, but ill probably buy a new graphics card in around 6 months.
thanks for the advice guys, ill keep you updated if anything happens
p.s if i made any spelling mistakes above then u can rest assured they were on purpose, and if i didnt then its because im just very clever.

Keep your chin up Dax. We all go through the same thing sometime in our love affairs with the Game and all the soft and hardware needed to run that game. I include chipmunk porn, but it's optional and nontaxable.
Sorry i had no help for you. I am an intel man and that's all I have ever owned, built or worked on. I threw out an AMD Tbird and MB, looked new but I had no clue and no time to learn it.
I have seen pc's so worked on by their previous owners that the power connectors were worn out from plugging and unplugging the hard drives, floppys and whatever they could get their meathooks into.
Even saw a guy point at a part in a pc I was setting up, got his hand right in next to the power supply with it running. Instant Afro and the room smelled like burned hair for days. The tard!!!
You will get there, and remember. It's only money and you can't take it with you. Semper Fi!
Thank god you didm't fry your motherboard. They would have reneged on the warranty for sure, scorch marks are hard to miss. Omg!

Im a disabled Navy combat flight engineer. They pay me to find time filling hobbys, so i started learning pc repair back when a video card had 16 megs of memory and that was more than anyone needed, like the Nvidea 7800 \512mb is now.
That first pc ran at 66mhz versus 533x2 on my current pc. Had a 486 cpu, soundblaster card in its pre=pci (33mhz) days. I think it ran at 16mhz. long time now. I was proud of my 32megs of ram and my 8 gig hard drive. Dos 6.0 and win 95 were the only game in town.
linux was even more labor intensive than it is today.
In the process and over the years i have built, rebuilt or repaired everything in between. I even found myself with a software collection that spans DOS 3.0 thru WinXp media edition 2005 and XPpro64. Everything that microsoft put its name on or included as neccesary I have in my cardboard archive. lol.
Win 95 came on 35 floppies, Win 98 was four or five times larger than that at default install config and I never saw it on floppies, thank god. But, I saw it advertised and for sale on floppies. Can ya imagine sitting there feeding 80 floppies to install windows? OMG, have to work in shifts, lol.
Jeez, I get carried away. Sorry bro. But like I said, we all have been there or are going to go there sooner or later. Learn from any and all of it and its an education well priced, I can swear to that. Gamers dont get much for their efforts and skills but Nerds get the ladies if ya know what I mean? Wink, Wink, Nod, Nod.
Oh, I added giant radio control aircraft, paragliding and GC to my hobbies over the years as well. I don't do dishes and I don't even look at my lawn, so time gets heavy at times. Still, I am a lucky man to be alive and loved by his kin and friends, so I won't complain.
You need anything, I am here my friend. Even if its just to help ya research something hard to find.
It's all good if you are learning anything constructive and you are.
You can get more stuff, but time for personal growth and skill collecting is limited. Take your time! Take breaks and avoid the frustration if ya can.
Get more than hardware for your bucks, get the real power, KNOWLEDGE.

thanks guys, its nice to know i can call on help.
35 disks for windows 98?!?!?! my god!!!!!!! talk about an outdated format!
its crazy to think how fast things move, and i wonder if it can keep going at the same pace. they seem to have reached a limit to CPU power at the moment, going for 2 cores to get around the limit of speed.
your right, i did learn alot from doing the upgrade actually. i was forced to play around with my bios and read up on websites to help me figure the problems out. so much so that i hope i can build my own machine next time rather than pay someone else to do it.
the earliest i can remember computers is when i had some kind of system that had games on casette tape. i cant remember what it was though as i only borrowed it for a couple of weeks. took 20 mins to load a game!
anyway, u get a pat on the back from me, from one military man to another. we're all brothers.
