Hey guys,

I have a problem. My computer starts using 50% of the CPU to run something called "Windows Search Indexer" every few minutes. It drives me nuts and it happens too frequently. Is there a way to stop it from doing this every 10 minutes?? I understand that it does need to run in order to make my searches go faster, but I feel like this action is not necessary every 10 minutes. Maybe once a day would be bearable.

If you have any solutions to this, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

maybe do a malware scan? It could just be disguised. I had something that sounded like it was a good thing happening whenever I booted aswell, which would take up like all my CPU and Ram etc, but after a malware scan it got removed.

in windows 7, every time you search you have the option to index that location.
i guess in windows 8 its already re-scanning your HDD from time to time automatically.

heres how to stop the process.

  • Go to your Explorer (Windows Key + E)
  • Right-Click your hard-drive
  • Properties
  • Untick "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties"
Biggest downside? Searching goes a lot slower when indexing is disabled.

Or disable the service as mentioned by Necromancer
