It's that fabulous time of year when we get to taketh from the taxman. Those 3 kids come in handy for all sorts of deductions.
I've been able to "appropriate" around $1000 for upgrades.
Current rig:
Chaintech 7NIF2 Socket A
AMD XP 3000+ FSB 333
2-512Mb Mushkin Purple PC3200
1-512 OEM (came from emachine carcas)PC2700 yes it does work w/the Mushies!
FX5700 Ultra (BF2 plays only on lowest settings)

Looks like I can salvage the Purple RAM.
Did some research, hard to keep current w/ technology.
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe 939
Athlon 64 3000+ Venice (OC the crap outta it)
GeForce 6800 GS (OC like above)
Bigger Power Supply
With this setup, will 1 Gb RAM be enough?
PS. I know that's only about $650 spent, leftover $$$ goes for new paint job on my '72 Dodge Charger.
All (NO PENTIUM) opinions welcomed, I haven't built in awhile.
Forgot about HD, SATA 16MB cache add $100

1 gb ram should be fine with that setup I run mine with 1gb ram and even an outdated Radeon 256 mb card, and I can run bf2 on highest settings without much problem. but as the saying goes you can never have enough ram.

Check the difference between a 6800 and 7800GT card. If you don't want to spend the extra i'd go for a card with an ATI X800 chipset instead of the nvidia 6800 one.

I just got 2 gigs of ram (threw out my old 768mb) and I LOVE it (big thanks to everyone who helped me pick it out). The improvement in everything is huge. For the first time, I can alt-tab BF2 and do all kinds of other stuff. I could even run two games at once. And everything loads faster.

might i recomend my setup i have I only spent 1000$ on this machine and i payed for everything, didn't try and salvage anything
ATI X800 XL - requires no molex conectors from the power supply
asus A8N-E Mobo, its a beast, 939 socket, supports x2 processors.
2 gigs ram made by gigaram,
AMD 64+ Clawhammer 4000+ processor,
yes the mobo is Nividia chipset, but works well with the ati card, no problems unless ur windows isn't legit then you will run into problems.
The case i bought came with a 550W power supply so i had ample power
also 80gig and 160 gig HDs

Ohhhh, so that's why I had problems in the past mixing the two. 8O
I swore off ATI due to ignorance (and greed)?

Nice setup Zeplin, you overclock any of it?

Sorry Ash, it goes to my kids. It's the only way to justify the expense to my wife. :( Then again, maybe if that trigger finger of yours wouldn't get so itchy when your flying jets....hmmm
