A master server / index is easy to create and cheap to maintain. I'm sure that If EA wanted to they would have their own master up and running in a week.
I think the real issue here is when to move on. All things come to an end eventually and everyone knows that at some point the support for these games will (have to) be stopped. I think EA just used this opportunity to do it.

This really is too bad, however I'm sure that most of these games that have enough people still and are still worth playing, such as Battlefield 2, will indeed have community patches to keep the game alive and online. BF2 already has one:

BF2PR will survive so I will only shed one tear over the memories of the glorious era of inf only Karkand, the J-10 and the two-seater jets will be lost.
