[Minecraft] Looking for information on MC Hosting...

Post by InsanityRocks »

Howdy Folks,

I'm looking for information on Minecraft server hosting: who's done it? did you go through a service? did you self-host? what was the experience like? - you know: the usual stuff. :)

I'm thinking of letting my son get an account on MC Pro Hosting

Does anyone have experience with them? What other services should I consider?

At this point any and all information will be most helpful and much appreciated.

Cheers

I did it, I've been playing Minecraft since the Alpha.

May I ask why do you need a real host? Is your son trying to set up a huge server? (50 ppl at least)

I'm trying to avoid allowing access to my home equipment.

And right now it won't be a huge server: < 10 people (methinks)

Oh okey, then yeah, try with MC Pro (they also host servers with mods, and modpacks), you should have no problems with a server for 10 guys or similar.
Sadly, I can't help you more than that since I never bought any server.

PS: If your son is gonna play something like FTB in a server just for a max of 10 guys, it may lag if they all play at the same time.

Good stuff - If I/we decide to go with MC Pro I'll report back my experiences. :)

We/I decided to go with MC Pro Hosting. We opted for the their Dirt Plan. It's $5.99USD/mo. 18 recommended players. 768 MB of RAM. All administration is done via a control panel called Multicraft; not sure if it's theirs or a white-label solution.

As we dig into it more I'll post more experiences.

I've run Vanilla, Tekkit and FTB (Direwolf20 mod pack).

Vanilla server dont require much of the server.

you can run a 95ppl server with less than 4gb of RAM.

all you need is a excellent CPU and I dont mean octa core and crap like that.

The best CPU you could buy these days for a minecraft server is a quad core (without HT if you choose Intel) with alot of Ghz ^^

another thing you'll need is a extremly fast HDD like 10K RPM SAS or an SSD otherwise you'll get server lag in the form of "The system cant keep up, did the system time changed?".

if you are running the server on linux make sure you got the JDK 7 and not JRE 6.

on windows it doesnt matter
