     Using the annual USSR War Games (Pacific Training Event), the largest annual military training exercise, mobilizing nearly all major divisions of the Red Army, the USSR launched a massive amphibious assault on the West Coast of the United States and Canada. This attack completely surprised the United States military and citizens. The Soviet invasion easily overcame any opposition because coordination between states, local authorities, and military units was nonexistent. It is estimated the U.S. forces killed ten thousand Soviet troops a day. But the Soviets would deploy thirty thousand troops a day. This lasted for nearly 4 months. During this time, the Red Army was able to capture Washington D.C, seizing President Shrapnel and the Commander of the U.S. Forces, General George Carville. After the fall of Washington D.C., the Europeans entered the war by using Einstein's experimental Chronosphere device to rescue the U.S. command from Washington. General Carville did not survive the relocation. The U.S. armed forces used another Einstein invention, the Prism tank. The new light armor vehicle proved effective against the Soviet Infantry, especially since the fired beam would reflect off the target and cause secondary damage to nearby soldiers. However, the Prism tanks proved inadequate against the heavy Soviet Rhino tanks. After being moved to Canada, President Shrapnel contacted Korea, Germany, France, and Great Britain, and officially established the Allied Forces.

== Shrapnel's Counterattack ==

     President Shrapnel, along with the leaders and high ranking military officials of the Allied Forces, established their global headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario. This location was selected for its strategic importance: relative closeness to the Atlantic Ocean, East Coast of the US, and access to the Great Lakes and interior of the US. Plans to recapture lost territory in the US, re-establish Washington D.C., and expel the invading Soviets were immediately made and put into action. Using the Chicago offensive as a diversion, Brigadier General TacticalVirus, along with Troops from Great Britain and Naval forces from Germany and France, started the liberation of the East Coast, starting with New York. After 4 grueling months of fierce fighting, the Allied Forces were finally able to expel the Soviets from the US soil. Current estimates put Soviet casualties at 1.8 million soldiers and Allied Forces casualties at 1.5 million, with the majority of those being U.S. troops. Washington D.C. was reestablished as the Capital of the US; President Shrapnel relocated the government shortly after the city was retaken. After the British were able to expel the Soviets from Canada, President Shrapnel convened a Military conference in San Diego, California.

     One topic of discussion, as reported by GCW Reporter Insanity Rocks: the Chronosphere. It was stated, in its current form the Chronosphere would not be used as a large-scale troop transport given about 20% of the moved objects would disappear and the fact it consumes large quantities of power, subsequently causing widespread black outs. Einstien, speaking via video conference, noted the power grid in Germany was still getting repaired due to his use of the Chronosphere to save the U.S. Command.

     During his opening speech, President Shrapnel, realizing Premier Cheesy was intent on World Domination, was reported as saying, "It's time for payback!" Large military convoys were reported as arriving in the San Diego area, adding hundreds of thousands of troops and vehicles to an already sizable military presence. In an 'Off the Record' comment, a high ranking Korean officer noted plans were in motion to send the combined forces West, to Asia.

== The passing of Premier Romanov ==
     A year ago the Soviet Premier, Alexander Romanov passed away at the age of 72, survived by his wife, Catherine.

Premier Romanov came to power after Stalin's death, just after the USSR surrendered to the Allied Forces. He had been on good terms with the Allied Forces and the countries they represented. Premier Romanov was instrumental in brokering many beneficial deals, including the easing of sanctions, the rebuilding of the Red Army for National security purposes, and much needed infusions of cash to help rebuild Soviet infrastructure and research facilities. However, his apparent alliance with the Allied Forces made him a very controversial Premier. He was frequently accused of being the puppet, or pet, of the West, by members inside and outside of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). There were claims he was working for the US Government, the sworn enemy of the USSR. There are unconfirmed reports that Romanov had the Allies' backing because they knew he could be easily turned against the West, or worse still, overthrown and replaced by a Communist hard-liner.

With the passing of Romanov, the CPSU had to elect a new Premier. The countries of the Allied Forces sent many high ranking diplomats and government officials to attend Premier Romanov's funeral proceedings. However they were also there to see his potential replacement and to hopefully exert some influence over the Political Bureau in the hopes of getting a Western-friendly Premier selected. Despite all efforts though, the Political Bureau finally chose Lenin's friend and Stalin's adviser, Commissar Cheesy for Premier.

== Cheesy's Revenge ==
     Before entering the Kremlin, then Commissar, Premier Cheesy took a hard stance against the West and the U.S., in particular calling the U.S. Stalin's murderer and destroyer of the Soviet Empire. This gained him many admirers and supporters. But in a move that many called Romanov-like he appeared to take a softer position when asked about his cooperation with the West. He honored all treaties, trade agreements and Soviet development plans with the U.S. and other Western countries. Cheesy, though, started to restrict access to his vast military complex. He even agreed to relocate the U.S. ambassador to Leningrad instead of removing him completely.

This raised concern in the CPSU. They began to openly criticize Premier Cheesy. But he used the Political Bureau to silence this public outcry. To further keep his opponents silent, he ordered the Red Army to begin extensive, large-scale training. Entire Divisions were mobilized, frequently in a moment's notice. They were allowed passage through many towns and cities, even during the middle of the day. Tightening his grip over the Red Army, Cheesy ordered that every unit/division will be assigned a Political Commissar.

Backed by the World's praise as a man that stands against fanatics and protects his people, Premier Cheesy started to put his real plan into action. With the aid of Gwynzer, a survivor from Stalin's Psychic Program, he rearmed the Soviet Union with the latest in military technology. He used the newly created World Socialist Alliance, an ostensibly West-friendly organization, to create a global network of Soviet countries that can be used to strike against the Allies. 6 months ago, Premier Cheesy, with a surprise attack against the United States, moved into the next phase of his plan.

     After the IMF failed to break out of South Africa a second time, loosing an entire corps in the process, they abandoned Africa and focused all their war effort towards Asia.

It was clear this would be the decisive battle for the United Nations, and troops from all over the alliance were sent to block the IMF advance. First contact was made in Thailand, near the town of Damak. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Gywnzer commanded the defense, facing Colonel Bock who commanded S.C.A.R.s attack. Multiple battles took place simultaneously along the 500 kilometer long front As different S.C.A.R. divisions tried to be the first ones to punch through the UN lines. On the 6th day the Secretary General was killed in a bombing raid and several of his officers were injured.

With the UNSC reeling from the loss of most of its High Command, S.C.A.R. broke the UNSC's defenses and started encircling them. A massive UN counter-attack was ordered, attempting to close the break. But due to bad coordination between both UN sides It ultimately failed. The Northern part of the UN line was surrounded and started taking heavy casualties from S.C.A.R. Artillery; their retreat route completely cut-off. The Southern part of the UN line, trying to retreat, suffered heavy losses by the pursuing S.C.A.R. Armour.

Realizing momentum had turned against him, and wanting to spare as many lives as he could, UN Deputy Secretary General CorranHorn gave the order to Stand-Down. His surrender orders were transmitted to Colonel Bock. The UN forces garrisoned in India and Kazakhstan surrendered consequently and without incident.

However not all UN members approved the surrender. The South African states that withheld the IMF invasion few month earlier said that they will continue fighting. France, who lost about 85% of its military force in the battle of Damak, also refused to surrender. Nigeria announced its negotiating its own terms of surrender with the IMF.

Two days after the battle of Damak began, dozens of S.C.A.R. agents raided Prof. Calloutman's home and offices. Prof. Calloutman was taken into custody along with other officers and close friends. The S.C.A.R. Council of Generals said that Calloutman is suspected of treason and high crimes by providing sensitive information spying for the enemy. A high ranking S.C.A.R. Officer told GCW Calloutman was under surveillance for a long time and they also have reason to believe Calloutman provided strategic military information to the UNSC regarding S.C.A.R. operations involving Congo and Zimbabwe as well as other sensitive information about S.C.A.R.

Calloutman's incarceration made the chairman of the Council of Generals, Brig. Gen Hitman, the acting president of the IMF. Even in the midst of IMF efforts to break the UN line at Damak, IMF officers and civilians began expressing growing concern about the army wing and the Council of Generals seizing control of the IMF, but the arrests did not stop.

On UN surrender, last Saturday, GCW estimates about 1,500 IMF personnel and associates were taken into custody.
Upon receiving Colonel Bock's communication regarding the surrender of the UNSC, Hitman declared an ultimatum to all remaining nations to surrender within 48 hours, or the people responsible will suffer the consequences and trialed in a military court for the unnecessary loss of life.

     A recent report that SCAR forces had been seen moving towards Asia caused an international uproar last week. Numerous countries reported many SCAR troops, tanks and short range missile batteries requested to pass through. This sudden SCAR movement under supposed UN authorization brought up an urgent request from both Asian and European countries to assemble a UN meeting with the IMF and demand to know whats going on.

Apparently, Prof. Calloutman and a committee of advisers decided that governments in the Balkans are not doing enough to get out of their economic crisis. According to a leaked IMF internal report, the poverty and terrorist groups rampaging in area is a significant threat to nearby economies, even slowing down the anticipated growth of the world economy. In light of these developments, Calloutman gave his troops authority to "use any means necessary" to re-posses them.

The reading of the report on the UN floor sparked immediate outrage. Many ambassadors berated SCAR for breaching the terms of their contract, which state that they cannot make military movements without first passing a majority vote in the UN Security Council. After the meeting, Secretary General Gwynzer and Prof. Calloutman talked in private for about 30 minutes. Afterwards Calloutman abruptly left the building, in what some eyewitnesses describe as "storming out".

Yesterday, Great Britain's minister of foreign affairs revealed that he and the prime minister have already contacted the other permanent members of the UNSC, NATO, and the G8. According to a UK report, these countries are working together to pass a vote to disarm the IMF. "For whatever bizarre reason, the United Nations has two different armed forces - one under the Security Council, and the other under the IMF. This is a blatant oversight of standard operating procedures, and poses a danger to world security. It cannot and will not go on any longer."

A UN spokesman also revealed that in an unusual step, the IMF has expelled or demoted many of it's UN staff members as a response to perceived anti-IMF activity in the UN. "Perpetrators of such acts will be construed as breaking international discrimination laws."

IMF spokesman said that the personnel in question were trying to obtain sensitive data about SCAR operations in order to pass this information to hostile hands in a supposed attempt to sabotage SCAR interests. These personnel were denied that information and expelled from SCAR facilities. The spokesman also said that an official complaint about them was submitted to the UN. The UN has confirmed a complaint was submitted by the IMF, and is currently being investigated according to international procedures.

Some commentators have gone so far as to hold Calloutman himself responsible for IMF actions, and demand that he retire and be replaced. Others point Hitman47, the professor's personal assistant and a high-ranking SCAR officer. As always, Global Conflict Weekly will keep you informed as the situation progresses.

    Few weeks has passed since Professor Calloutman "stormed out" of the meeting with Secretary General Gwynzer, amid growing opposition to SCAR's methods and tactics, Colonel Hitman47, flanked by Professor Calloutman, Colonel Bock, Colonel Sao, and several other high-ranking SCAR officers, publicly and formally dissolved all ties to the IMF and UN. Hitman47 vowed their work had only started, warning the UN and other nations to either 'pay up' or 'submit'. Professor Calloutman appeared pensive, distracted, weakly smiling, while the crowd cheered his name.

    This week we witnessed how SCAR successfully repossessed the United States, including the Caribbean in what can only be viewed as a preemptive strike against the UNSC and its coalition of nations. This can be seen as a major blow since the USNC had setup a base of operations in California to 'keep watch' over SCAR in the Western Hemisphere.

Secretary General Gwynzer is on record as saying he was nervous about the growing hostilities from, and apparent growing support for, SCAR in South America. He quickly assembled a base of operations in California in the hopes of keeping SCAR in check and to report on their activities in the Americas. However, Professor Calloutman had other plans.

Professor Calloutman had already successfully repossessed most of the United States before the USNC set up its headquarters in California. Professor Calloutman took this as an 'act of aggression'; he dismisses the UN's current posturing as 'typical bureaucratic, self-serving, bluster; not meant to be taken seriously'.

Utilizing his vast resources and popularity in Latin America, Professor Calloutman was able to easily catch the USNC off guard and reposes the Caribbean. After taking the Caribbean, he was able to successfully capture the USNC Headquarters in California with three divisions of SCAR, this also included local militia in full support of SCAR and its goals. However, Professor Calloutman was not to experience success for all of his operations.

The USNC was able to successfully regroup and repel an attack against Nunavut. Coming at the end of his successful capture of the United States, Professor Calloutman played down his defeat, stating, "it's only a matter of time before I'm able to get what's due me and SCAR; I can wait."

But Professor Calloutman was not done with his show of force. On the other side of the world, his forces were successfully doing his bidding, repossessing all in their path against little to no resistance. In coordinated attacks, Moscow fell to a two-front attack led by Colonel Bock and Colonel Hitman47, expanding their presence in Eastern Europe. Colonel Sao was able to repossess China, securing much needed resources and raw materials for their military machine.

One footnote: It's been rumored, but neither confirmed nor denied by SCAR, an expeditionary force was sent to Nigeria to test UNSC's defenses on the African continent and never returned.

    Few weeks has passed since Professor Calloutman "stormed out" of the meeting with Secretary General Gwynzer, amid growing opposition to SCAR's methods and tactics, Colonel Hitman47, flanked by Professor Calloutman, Colonel Bock, Colonel Sao, and several other high-ranking SCAR officers, publicly and formally dissolved all ties to the IMF and UN. Hitman47 vowed their work had only started, warning the UN and other nations to either 'pay up' or 'submit'. Professor Calloutman appeared pensive, distracted, weakly smiling, while the crowd cheered his name.

    This week we witnessed how SCAR successfully repossessed the United States, including the Caribbean in what can only be viewed as a preemptive strike against the UNSC and its coalition of nations. This can be seen as a major blow since the USNC had setup a base of operations in California to 'keep watch' over SCAR in the Western Hemisphere.

Secretary General Gwynzer is on record as saying he was nervous about the growing hostilities from, and apparent growing support for, SCAR in South America. He quickly assembled a base of operations in California in the hopes of keeping SCAR in check and to report on their activities in the Americas. However, Professor Calloutman had other plans.

Professor Calloutman had already successfully repossessed most of the United States before the USNC set up its headquarters in California. Professor Calloutman took this as an 'act of aggression'; he dismisses the UN's current posturing as 'typical bureaucratic, self-serving, bluster; not meant to be taken seriously'.

Utilizing his vast resources and popularity in Latin America, Professor Calloutman was able to easily catch the USNC off guard and reposes the Caribbean. After taking the Caribbean, he was able to successfully capture the USNC Headquarters in California with three divisions of SCAR, this also included local militia in full support of SCAR and its goals. However, Professor Calloutman was not to experience success for all of his operations.

The USNC was able to successfully regroup and repel an attack against Nunavut. Coming at the end of his successful capture of the United States, Professor Calloutman played down his defeat, stating, "it's only a matter of time before I'm able to get what's due me and SCAR; I can wait."

But Professor Calloutman was not done with his show of force. On the other side of the world, his forces were successfully doing his bidding, repossessing all in their path against little to no resistance. In coordinated attacks, Moscow fell to a two-front attack led by Colonel Bock and Colonel Hitman47, expanding their presence in Eastern Europe. Colonel Sao was able to repossess China, securing much needed resources and raw materials for their military machine.

One footnote: It's been rumored, but neither confirmed nor denied by SCAR, an expeditionary force was sent to Nigeria to test UNSC's defenses on the African continent and never returned.

     A recent report that SCAR forces had been seen moving towards Asia caused an international uproar last week. Numerous countries reported many SCAR troops, tanks and short range missile batteries requested to pass through. This sudden SCAR movement under supposed UN authorization brought up an urgent request from both Asian and European countries to assemble a UN meeting with the IMF and demand to know whats going on.

Apparently, Prof. Calloutman and a committee of advisers decided that governments in the Balkans are not doing enough to get out of their economic crisis. According to a leaked IMF internal report, the poverty and terrorist groups rampaging in area is a significant threat to nearby economies, even slowing down the anticipated growth of the world economy. In light of these developments, Calloutman gave his troops authority to "use any means necessary" to re-posses them.

The reading of the report on the UN floor sparked immediate outrage. Many ambassadors berated SCAR for breaching the terms of their contract, which state that they cannot make military movements without first passing a majority vote in the UN Security Council. After the meeting, Secretary General Gwynzer and Prof. Calloutman talked in private for about 30 minutes. Afterwards Calloutman abruptly left the building, in what some eyewitnesses describe as "storming out".

Yesterday, Great Britain's minister of foreign affairs revealed that he and the prime minister have already contacted the other permanent members of the UNSC, NATO, and the G8. According to a UK report, these countries are working together to pass a vote to disarm the IMF. "For whatever bizarre reason, the United Nations has two different armed forces - one under the Security Council, and the other under the IMF. This is a blatant oversight of standard operating procedures, and poses a danger to world security. It cannot and will not go on any longer."

A UN spokesman also revealed that in an unusual step, the IMF has expelled or demoted many of it's UN staff members as a response to perceived anti-IMF activity in the UN. "Perpetrators of such acts will be construed as breaking international discrimination laws."

IMF spokesman said that the personnel in question were trying to obtain sensitive data about SCAR operations in order to pass this information to hostile hands in a supposed attempt to sabotage SCAR interests. These personnel were denied that information and expelled from SCAR facilities. The spokesman also said that an official complaint about them was submitted to the UN. The UN has confirmed a complaint was submitted by the IMF and is being investigated according to procedures.

Some commentators have gone so far as to hold Calloutman himself responsible for IMF actions, and demand that he retire and be replaced. Others point Hitman47, the professor's personal assistant and a high-ranking SCAR officer. As always, Global Conflict Weekly will keep you informed as the situation progresses.

I joined GC in 2004, when I saw a post on planetbattlefield.com talking about it. I was still in high school, I would have been 15, and I had lots of free time so I got really into it. Back then it was C6 of Battlefield 1942, the first game they played at GC. I don't even know how it all formed up, that's before my time You have to ask Brummie and Ghoul about that.

We played a couple more campaigns of BF42. We had amazing battles back then. Every campaign was Axis vs. Allies and a lot of guys would stay on the same side every time. The Axis squads had German names and German ranks and people took the realism way more seriously. The campaign map was unbelievably detailed, and we had like 50 different custom maps. Each army had a special squad that just ran the destroyers and submarines. One of my first battledays was over Egypt and the map we played had a pyramid on it

Then Battlefield Vietnam came out. I really liked it but most people hated it. We tried to have a BFV campaign but we could never get very good numbers because none of the BF42 veterans liked the game. I think I ended up as a general or something, not because I was any good at it but because nobody else would...some things never change here

After that GC sort of went into hibernation mode. Nobody played BFV, we didn't have any BF42 campaigns left, so the community got really quiet and empty. Actually, for a while there the most active part of GC was our WoW guild! Yea, that happened.

Then in 2005 (im cheating and using wikipedia here) Battlefield 2 came out. Suddenly the whole community came back to life. We got a bunch of new people, a bunch of vets came back, and we had a bunch of big campaigns. A lot of people you see around now, joined at this time. We couldn't figure out what the story of BF2 was supposed to be so we kept making it up: we had some US and Russians and Chinese armies, we had squads named after Egyptian gods, we had a Star Wars campaign, we even had one army that was themed around monkeys. One squad was called the Crapflingers.

We played BF2 for 2 years at least. In campaign 8 I was general. It was a really fun campaign, probably the closest one I ever played in. By that time we had so many good custom maps to fight over, we'd gotten really good at the tactics, we had lots of experienced players, and we'd figured out the right set of rules to make the game fun. We played multiple different mods on the campaign map, so Russia was Point of Existence and Africa was Desert Combat, etc. Every map matched the geography it was supposed to be on really well. That campaign ended up lasting 4 months! My team lost

After that I went to college with my crappy laptop and went totally awol. Suddenly I had no free time and my computer couldn't even play the intro movie to Battlefield. But people kept on playing BF2 with more mods, they played Bad Company, and a bunch of other stuff.

How many different flags can you count?

For 4 years I was pretty checked out, then last year I graduated and moved to Seattle (I only live in places with high pings ) and started a job working for the man as a software project manager. Suddenly I lived in a city where I didn't know anybody (= lots of free time), a computer that sort of worked, and BF3 came out! So a few months after it came out, I checked back at GC and saw all these familiar names had organized a new campaign. Eventually I decided to buy the game and try it out (I only bought BF3 to play here, and I've barely done any pubbing outside a battleday since ).

The last part of the story I'll tell is when most of you guys came in. I was pretty late to C1 and played as a neutral with no clue how to play the game. Then before C2 started I got a PM from Shrapnel asking to join his officer corps. (Funny side note: about 8 years earlier, in BF42, I was a captain of an infantry squad and Shrap was the 1st leiutenant ). I don't think he knew how bad I was at the game, but I said yes.

So we played two or three battledays of C2, and they were pretty fun. But the numbers weren't great: we could only get 20-25 people on each side for a Saturday battleday. Hitman had started up some recruiting again, so I decided I would spend a Sunday morning posting up messages on some sites. First I wrote up a "What is GC" post that I would link people to, since before that there was no place that really explained what we do. Then I posted on like 10 random Battlefield sites getting people to visit. Then just for the lulz, I thought I would post on Reddit too to see if anybody would notice.

Then I went to grab a sandwich, and when I came back I saw we had like 20 people signed up saying they came from Reddit. And I thought, "omg, if they all stay maybe we can fill the server!" Then in like 5 minutes, 20 more signed up. Then 50 more. All of a sudden people were showing up so fast we started freaking out. We were like, "what are we gonna do with 100 new signups?" The GC veterans started going on Teamspeak, just so we could deal with the random people jumping on there to see what was up.

Then it just got bigger and bigger. For a while, a few of us were just sitting in a TS channel watching the Google Analytics thing pop a little circle up whenever a new visit came. It was like watching popcorn from inside the bag. We got like 200 signups, TS went crazy, and the forums broke! Madcow and Goggles and I had this frantic conversations on TS trying to fix the database, but not really knowing what we were doing. Duke meanwhile was up in a channel with like 60 people trying to be a one man welcoming committee. It was a pretty insane Sunday afternoon.

'''When did Black Ops started?''' 
We used to have two 6-hour battledays everyweek. One army's attack would be 6 hours Saturday, then the other army's attack would be 6 hours Tuesday. There was no such thing as black ops in 1942. Tuesday was just a normal battleday.

In BF2 we had lower numbers on Tuesdays, and it was hard to find a time when both NA/EU could play. The game had also introduced small versions of every map that just had 3 flags. So we decided to play those as the "city" versions of the big "territory" maps. That was the original black ops.

'''Was there hard times for GC?''' 
It always gets very dead here in between games. Our first crisis was after BF42 had been out for a while, but BF2 wasn't out yet. BF Vietnam and BF 2142 were out, but at the time our player base only really liked WW2 games and didn't want to play either of those games. So we could never get good campaigns going with those other campaigns, but at the same time people were getting tired of BF42. Nobody could agree on which mods to play. Eventually things just went quiet for several months, where nobody would post on the forums for several days.

Same thing happened again after people got tired of playing BF2. Actually, at the time I went AFK too. But for a very long time, GC was very quiet, it was just a small group of guys playing random games and hanging out on TS. We didn't have an official campaign going for at least a year i think.

But in both cases, everything was solved when a a new BF game came out -- BF2 the first time, BF3 more recently. That's why even though I hate having to pay for all these half-finished DLC's, I like how EA is pumping out so many Battlefield games and expansions now. It means our community always has something new to play every few months. By the time we get tired of BF3, BF4 will be out and we won't have to wait very long.

'''Any memorable campaigns?''' 
My favorite campaigns are the very long ones, like this one. You get a real sense of army identity, and level of coordination really goes up. You also get to know everyone on your army from playing with them in battledays over and over.

But we definitely have some memorable short campaigns from the BF2 days. There were a lot of general ragequits then, I can't even remember why. I just remember one general calling us all a word that sounds like "maggot" and then disconnecting forever.

'''How did the rules form up?''' 
All of our rules are really old, and some of them don't make any sense They all come from specific incidents. For example, we have a lot of rules about air camping air that came from how easy it was for jets to camp each other in all the BF games. But we also have rules that allow you to go in the uncap when the army has other flags, which dates back to BF42/BF2 when you could actually go into the enemy base and steal vehicles. Now that's impossible.

'''What do you think of BF3? does it favors GC game style better or worse?''' 
I hated it at first, but now that I have a good enough computer to play it I like it a lot more Some things are really good, like all the toys: mortars, MAVs, javelins, etc. I like anything in the game that encourages teamwork and coordination.

But a lot of things also suck. The 4-player squad limit is terrible -- BF2 had 6-man squads and that was the sweet spot. It meant you usually had 5 squads to coordinate instead of 8, and each one was labeled on the minimap with a letter so you knew who was where. Now we spend all our time on channel commander screaming "who's on A???". Also, commander mode in BF2 was way better. The MAV seems like an intentionally shitty way to FC, because it's so easy to get shot down and there are no colors.

'''What do you think about the current shape of GC?''' 
We are in excellent shape. GC is usually always in some kind of crisis. Usually there are always people fighting and threatening to quit, or we don't have enough people, or the campaign is totally imbalanced, or people are causing trouble in the forums. But right now things just seem so stable. I hope it lasts forever!

'''What do you think about the current campaign? who will win?''' 
I love this campaign. It's always a miracle when we have a close campaign. Usually one side just gets dominant, and they win most of the battles and nobody has much fun. This time around, every single battleday each side will win several rounds. That means both sides always have to fight their best, and as soon as anybody gets lazy their butt gets kicked!

And of course, Starfisher's Coffee Initiative will win in the end!

'''What do you think is the future of GC? what would you like it to be?''' 
I want it to stay just like this. Full servers, but not too full. Competitive battles, but not too competitive.

I like turning on the flags in Teamspeak, and seeing how many different countries we have in our battledays. I am a boring American, so it's really fun to meet all these people from around the world.

Partway through that campaign, I got invited to join the special ops squad. This was a group of 4 guys (Brenil, ColonelHogan, FalconX, and me) who would show up to every single battleday, so we got really good at working together. Our job was always to sneak around the map stealing stuff and blowing up the enemy main base.

In BF2 we had lower numbers on Tuesdays, and it was hard to find a time when both NA/EU could play. The game had also introduced small versions of every map that just had 3 flags. So we decided to play those as the "city" versions of the big "territory" maps. That was the original black ops.

It always gets very dead here in between games. Our first crisis was after BF42 had been out for a while, but BF2 wasn't out yet. BF Vietnam and BF 2142 were out, but at the time our player base only really liked WW2 games and didn't want to play either of those games. So we could never get good campaigns going with those other campaigns, but at the same time people were getting tired of BF42. Nobody could agree on which mods to play. Eventually things just went quiet for several months, where nobody would post on the forums for several days.

Same thing happened again after people got tired of playing BF2. Actually, at the time I went AFK too. But for a very long time, GC was very quiet, it was just a small group of guys playing random games and hanging out on TS. We didn't have an official campaign going for at least a year i think.

But in both cases, everything was solved when a a new BF game came out -- BF2 the first time, BF3 more recently. That's why even though I hate having to pay for all these half-finished DLC's, I like how EA is pumping out so many Battlefield games and expansions now. It means our community always has something new to play every few months. By the time we get tired of BF3, BF4 will be out and we won't have to wait very long.

'''Any memorable campaigns?''' 
My favorite campaigns are the very long ones, like this one. You get a real sense of army identity, and level of coordination really goes up. You also get to know everyone on your army from playing with them in battledays over and over.

But we definitely have some memorable short campaigns from the BF2 days. There were a lot of general ragequits then, I can't even remember why. I just remember one general calling us all a word that sounds like "maggot" and then disconnecting forever.

All of our rules are really old, and some of them don't make any sense They all come from specific incidents. For example, we have a lot of rules about air camping air that came from how easy it was for jets to camp each other in all the BF games. But we also have rules that allow you to go in the uncap when the army has other flags, which dates back to BF42/BF2 when you could actually go into the enemy base and steal vehicles. Now that's impossible.

'''What do you think of BF3? does it favors GC game style better or worse?''' 
I hated it at first, but now that I have a good enough computer to play it I like it a lot more Some things are really good, like all the toys: mortars, MAVs, javelins, etc. I like anything in the game that encourages teamwork and coordination.

But a lot of things also suck. The 4-player squad limit is terrible -- BF2 had 6-man squads and that was the sweet spot. It meant you usually had 5 squads to coordinate instead of 8, and each one was labeled on the minimap with a letter so you knew who was where. Now we spend all our time on channel commander screaming "who's on A???". Also, commander mode in BF2 was way better. The MAV seems like an intentionally shitty way to FC, because it's so easy to get shot down and there are no colors.

We are in excellent shape. GC is usually always in some kind of crisis. Usually there are always people fighting and threatening to quit, or we don't have enough people, or the campaign is totally imbalanced, or people are causing trouble in the forums. I love this campaign. It's always a miracle when we have a close campaign. Usually one side just gets dominant, and they win most of the battles and nobody has much fun. I joined GC in 2004, when I saw a post on planetbattlefield.com talking about it. I was still in high school, I would have been 15, and I had lots of free time so I got really into it. Back then it was C6 of Battlefield 1942, the first game they played at GC. I don't even know how it all formed up, that's before my time You have to ask Brummie and Ghoul about that.

We played a couple more campaigns of BF42. We had amazing battles back then. Every campaign was Axis vs. Allies and a lot of guys would stay on the same side every time. The Axis squads had German names and German ranks and people took the realism way more seriously. The campaign map was unbelievably detailed, and we had like 50 different custom maps. Each army had a special squad that just ran the destroyers and submarines. One of my first battledays was over Egypt and the map we played had a pyramid on it

Then Battlefield Vietnam came out. I really liked it but most people hated it. We tried to have a BFV campaign but we could never get very good numbers because none of the BF42 veterans liked the game. I think I ended up as a general or something, not because I was any good at it but because nobody else would...some things never change here

After that GC sort of went into hibernation mode. Nobody played BFV, we didn't have any BF42 campaigns left, so the community got really quiet and empty. Actually, for a while there the most active part of GC was our WoW guild! Yea, that happened.

Then in 2005 (im cheating and using wikipedia here) Battlefield 2 came out. Suddenly the whole community came back to life. We got a bunch of new people, a bunch of vets came back, and we had a bunch of big campaigns. A lot of people you see around now, joined at this time. We couldn't figure out what the story of BF2 was supposed to be so we kept making it up: we had some US and Russians and Chinese armies, we had squads named after Egyptian gods, we had a Star Wars campaign, we even had one army that was themed around monkeys. One squad was called the Crapflingers.

We played BF2 for 2 years at least. In campaign 8 I was general. It was a really fun campaign, probably the closest one I ever played in. By that time we had so many good custom maps to fight over, we'd gotten really good at the tactics, we had lots of experienced players, and we'd figured out the right set of rules to make the game fun. We played multiple different mods on the campaign map, so Russia was Point of Existence and Africa was Desert Combat, etc. Every map matched the geography it was supposed to be on really well. That campaign ended up lasting 4 months! My team lost

After that I went to college with my crappy laptop and went totally awol. Suddenly I had no free time and my computer couldn't even play the intro movie to Battlefield. But people kept on playing BF2 with more mods, they played Bad Company, and a bunch of other stuff.

How many different flags can you count?

For 4 years I was pretty checked out, then last year I graduated and moved to Seattle (I only live in places with high pings ) and started a job working for the man as a software project manager. Suddenly I lived in a city where I didn't know anybody (= lots of free time), a computer that sort of worked, and BF3 came out! So a few months after it came out, I checked back at GC and saw all these familiar names had organized a new campaign. Eventually I decided to buy the game and try it out (I only bought BF3 to play here, and I've barely done any pubbing outside a battleday since ).

The last part of the story I'll tell is when most of you guys came in. I was pretty late to C1 and played as a neutral with no clue how to play the game. Then before C2 started I got a PM from Shrapnel asking to join his officer corps. (Funny side note: about 8 years earlier, in BF42, I was a captain of an infantry squad and Shrap was the 1st leiutenant ). I don't think he knew how bad I was at the game, but I said yes.

So we played two or three battledays of C2, and they were pretty fun. But the numbers weren't great: we could only get 20-25 people on each side for a Saturday battleday. Hitman had started up some recruiting again, so I decided I would spend a Sunday morning posting up messages on some sites. First I wrote up a "What is GC" post that I would link people to, since before that there was no place that really explained what we do. Then I posted on like 10 random Battlefield sites getting people to visit. Then just for the lulz, I thought I would post on Reddit too to see if anybody would notice.

Then I went to grab a sandwich, and when I came back I saw we had like 20 people signed up saying they came from Reddit. And I thought, "omg, if they all stay maybe we can fill the server!" Then in like 5 minutes, 20 more signed up. Then 50 more. All of a sudden people were showing up so fast we started freaking out. We were like, "what are we gonna do with 100 new signups?" The GC veterans started going on Teamspeak, just so we could deal with the random people jumping on there to see what was up.

Then it just got bigger and bigger. For a while, a few of us were just sitting in a TS channel watching the Google Analytics thing pop a little circle up whenever a new visit came. It was like watching popcorn from inside the bag. We got like 200 signups, TS went crazy, and the forums broke! Madcow and Goggles and I had this frantic conversations on TS trying to fix the database, but not really knowing what we were doing. Duke meanwhile was up in a channel with like 60 people trying to be a one man welcoming committee. It was a pretty insane Sunday afternoon.

'''When did Black Ops started?''' 
We used to have two 6-hour battledays everyweek. One army's attack would be 6 hours Saturday, then the other army's attack would be 6 hours Tuesday. There was no such thing as black ops in 1942. Tuesday was just a normal battleday.
