I did send an Email to the Steam guys asking whether BF3 will be available via Steam also at some point, they answered they have no word on that

@sushi I'll check later for the exact article but IGN had a report that Battlefield3 would in fact make it to Steam but would not be available upon initial release. It will be on Steam at some later date. Seemingly related to the Karkand expansion. Once that stops being free, you'll see the game on steam without it. Probably not worth it

They'll say that it gives a better experience to the customer and by that they mean that they couldn't be bothered to program it into the game.

I bet a patch will add this later. Its going to be advertised as a brand new exciting feature before the patch release.

Certainly there will be a way to join your friends or connect to a specific server.
Why would they make the game incompatible with clan matches or team play?
